Hospice Caregiver Taunya Knight Recognized by Maine’s Sun Journal

Hospice caregivers offer a unique service to individuals with end-of-life disease and illness.

Caregivers focus on comfort, pain relief, and physical and mental support for patients and provide family members peace of mind during a challenging time.

Due to COVID-19 restrictions, most family members are unable to visit or physically attend to their ill or elderly loved one, and our hospice caregivers have become the loving bridge between the two. From scheduling video and phone calls to updating family on daily activities, caregivers make extraordinary efforts to keep family members involved in the care of their loved ones. Sometimes the most important thing caregivers can do is hold a hand and be a companion to those who would otherwise be isolated.

Our caregivers embody compassion and caring for those they serve. Taunya Knight, our caregiver in Maine, has been recognized by Maine’s Sun Journal as someone who embodies these attributes in the community. Their families and community members celebrated her caregiving of several individuals who have passed. In the article, one family explained the countless ways she cared for their loved one when the family was unable to.

Constellation Hospice Caregiver, Taunya Knight, Is Highlighted.

The Sun Journal reported:

“According to Madeline’s daughter, Karen, Knight ‘fed my mother, dressed her, bathed her, read to her, listened to music with her, painted her nails, took her for strolls in her wheelchair and got her addicted to hot chocolate.’

“She did, Karen said, ‘all the things we wished we could do—and would have—had it not been for the COVID-19 restrictions.’

“The family found great comfort, Karen said, knowing Knight was with their mother. At the time, she remembers thinking, ‘I know if Taunya’s going to be with her today, that she’s going to have a good day.’”

The pandemic certainly brought change, and Taunya has been able to make life easier for the families she serves. She has taken on the role of many.

“I have to approach it as more than just a hospice aide,” Taunya told Constellation. “I’m now their caregiver and their family. I’ve kind of taken all that into stride and my care tactic with them.”

At Constellation, we are incredibly proud of Taunya and our hospice aides and caregivers who provide loving compassion and limitless attention to individuals at their end-of-life.

“Taunya is a true gem. She is the most humble, kind, compassionate person that I have ever worked with,” said Robert A. Jelley, RNC, Administrator MA/NH/ME. “I am proud to say that she is part of the Constellation family!”

Our approach to hospice care continues to be: treating people like family—and with Taunya and our hospice caregivers—they’ve done just that.
